Utility Interactive Solar Grid Tie Inverters
A point of confusion is Solar Grid Tie Inverters do not always have a battery bank. The input
voltage requirement for grid tie only inverters are normally well above standard battery
voltage, Normally a grid tie only inverter will have from 195 volts DC up to 600 volts DC and will
shut down when the utility is down. A Grid Tie Backup Inverter allows you to keep a 24 or 48
volt battery bank in the loop for use during a power outage.
A Grid tie system is a "Great idea". You are able to feed electricity
into the grid which helps to keep pollution down and the green house
effect in check. By not requiring as much coal, natural gas or the
use of nuclear fuel. Nuclear fuel is a hazard to any living thing
plant, animal or human. It takes thousands of years for the Earth to
absorb nuclear waste if ever. And then millions of tax dollars each
year to store and guard the hazard waste site and clean up leakage.
One more point of confusion with grid tie systems. People think they
no longer have an electric bill. Yes you will have an electric bill. There
will always be a point of use fee and a net metering fee.
Some may argue that you could go off grid and use the saved fees to buy a new battery bank every
10 years and have money left over. But you do need to take care of an off grid system and have a
generator for times when it rains for a week at a time. An off grid system will need to be extra
large, maybe even twice as large as a grid tie only system. This is because you can't use the grid as
a battery backup when there is no sun. A fun fact is if you are grid tied you force the non believers
and nuclear guys to use your renewable solar energy because you are back feeding to the grid
through your inverter.
