Inverters with a Built In Transfer Switch

Main Sections
Transfer Switch, You can find modified sine wave inverters with a built in 120 volt transfer
switch and battery charger as well in the better brands. A Transfer switch is a great item to
have attached to an electrical back up system if you are using modified sine wave or true
sine wave. This device is great for when the grid power goes down. It will switch from grid to
backup power in a flash that you will not even be able to see or even notice.
However, if you are using an external transfer switch you need to place a breaker in the
line after the transfer switch. If you are running from grid power and something fries in your
TV or toaster and trips the breaker on the grid power the transfer switch will auto switch you
to your battery backup. If you are lucky the backup power breaker will trip as well. But it
might not in time to prevent a fire from wires over heating. So put a breaker after the
transfer switch and on both power supplies the, Grid and the Backup power system going to
the transfer switch.

You can get a transfer switch in standard sizes like 30 amps, 50 amps and 100 amps at a
good price. You can use two switches if you are stacking your inverters to get 220 volts.

The
inverters that have a transfer switch built in could save a little in wiring and an
extra breaker and breaker box. This is because normally there will be a breaker in the AC
line going to the these type of inverters and then a main breaker and a line breaker in the
line going from the inverter to the House, RV or what ever the load may be. This method
allows you to run wiring right from your house breaker box to the inverter which can keep
your battery bank charged as well.

The built in transfer switch will bypass the inverter and go through the inverters breakers
and on to the wiring in your home. Gives you two breakers in the same line, You want the
breaker after the inverter / transfer switch to be smaller then the one before the
inverter/transfer switch. This way when there is a problem and a switch trips off it will be the
one after both power sources so it don’t have to trip both switches to shut off the power.
One other thing is the breaker that is going from the grid to the inverter is normally a 30 amp
or greater breaker because it is used to charge the battery bank as well as power the loads.
